Madrid
This is a famous statue of the Cybles.
The lions were supposed to be suitors
to a very fast young lady.  They tried
to catch her by tricking her into picking
up golden apples during a foot race.
The trick angered the Cyble and she
turned the suitors into lions and forced
them to pull her chariot.
November 10, I think it was, is the
Santa Maria celebration in Madrid.  We
managed to get front row seats to both
the church services at the Madrid
cathedral as well as at the Mayor Plaza
and then the
parade.
After a long day of walking and a lot of
wierd food, we spotted the Hard Rock
Cafe across the street.  We talked to
the English host and had an old
fashioned hot fudge sunday.
The botanical gardens offerd us a little
bit of educational refuge on a fairly
cold day in Madrid.  We noticed the
next morning that most of the flowers
around the city had frost bite.
The Plaza de la Villa was a
pleasant area near one of the
more famous and more
difficult to see cathedrals.
Though the cathedral is still
there, the original cathedral
was burned down and the
only historically significant
part is the remaining front
facade.
The buildings along Grand Via
are quite picturesque and very
reminiscent of what we think
Europe should look like.
We couldn't help but notice that the
decorations on the tops of the
buildings were, at time, more ornate
than the decorations that America puts
in it's best parks.
This is a view of the cathedral of
Madrid.  We were there on St. Maria's
celebration so there were quite a few
others with us.
In the square that surrounded the
palace, there were human
"manequins" that performed any time
you dropped money into their hats.
There were also a pair of dancers that
were quite good at the Flamenco but
they stopped just as we decided to
take their picure.
This is the back side of the palace in
Madrid.  At least, I think it is the back
side.  Either way, the royal family stays
here a couple of times a year.  It is one
of the larges palaces in Europe though
it has the distinction of never being
finished.
The front of the palace.  The garden
that you'll see in the next picture was
directly in front of this palace.  It's quite
a garden.  I can't seem to talk Lester
into doing this with my front yard but
there is time yet.
